This Side Of Paradise (F. Scott & Zelda Fitzgerald) Songs from New Off-Broadway Musical
Composer: Harrow, Nancy
Lyricist: Harrow, Nancy
Current Off-Broadway musical uses songs about Scott & Zelda that appear on this earlier CD 'Winter Dreams: The Life & Passions of F Scott Fitzgerald' by Nancy Harrow and Grady Tate.
This Side Of Paradise - The 2010 Off-Broadway Engagement of 'This Side of Paradise' at the renowned St. Clement's Theatre at 423 W. 46th Street in Times Square, New York City used music from Nancy Harrow's earlier CD. In this musical, the first-ever “It” couple, Zelda and F. Scott Fitzgerald (author of novels such as The Great Gatsby) embody the success, glamour and excess of 1920s America. The beautiful and doomed Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, those glittering emblems of the Jazz Age, are resurrected to do the Charleston once again in “This Side of Paradise,” the new musical at the Theater at St. Clements. Nancy Harrow, a talented jazz singer and songwriter, provides the score and wrote the book with the musical’s director, Will Pomerantz. Much of the music is drawn from Ms. Harrow’s album “Winter Dreams,” a song cycle inspired by the story of the Fitzgeralds, released on CD in 2003. It’s a pleasant listen. Ms. Harrow’s music is accomplished, gently melodic light jazz, and she has put together a terrific band for the production: Art Hirahara (piano), Bill Easley (reeds), Calvin Jones (bass) and Willie Martinez (drums). A unique biography of jazz babies F. Scott Fitzgerald and his wife, Zelda. It's not an adaptation of Fitzgerald's first novel with the same title, but a musical interpretation. Backed by fine jazz musicians, the actors retell the story of the Fitzgeralds' famous and tragic romance, with special attention paid to Zelda, Scott's troubled muse.
